I agree, caravans get raided so often mid-late game, they hardly ever make their money back. And my workshops don't give much, even when placed in supposedly good towns and producing the right goods. Maybe I need to try to get them producing other things but most of mine vanished when all empire factions declared war against me.

I hit my workshop limit, so I decided to start a caravan instead. Started it in a relatively safe and distant city from any wars. But just in case I paid extra to make sure they could handle a fight if it came to that (bands of 40-60 looters will rarely appear sometimes). I read that it takes about a week for it to start generating a profit. The only reliable income is through looting and trading (auto trader mod preferred). The taxes from my fiefs don't pay for their mid sized garrison, the income from my parties typically don't cover their party wage, my caravans, even at 200+ trade full upgraded don't turn profits most days.
